How infrared heating works
Most heaters warm the air, and the air warms you. In a tall room or a draughty building, that warm air rises or escapes before it does much good. Infrared panels work differently: they warm the people, floor and walls in front of them directly, so the heat is felt almost as soon as they're switched on.
That makes infrared a good fit wherever conventional heating struggles: high ceilings, buildings used a few hours at a time, rooms with no space for a radiator, and outbuildings with no heating at all. Panels mount flush on a wall or ceiling, and some double as a mirror or a picture.
Where it makes sense
| SPACE | WHY INFRARED SUITS IT |
|---|---|
| Village halls & churches | Heat in minutes when people arrive, off when they leave. No heating an empty building for hours in advance |
| Workshops & garages | Warms the person at the bench, not the whole volume of a tall, draughty space |
| Garden rooms & conservatories | No wet heating to extend. Slim panels on the wall or ceiling |
| Bathrooms & en-suites | IP-rated mirror and ceiling panels; helps keep condensation down |
| Offices & shops | Zone by zone, on timers or occupancy control |

Infrared heating questions, answered
How is infrared different from a normal radiator?
A radiator warms the air, which then has to warm you. Infrared panels warm people, floors and walls directly, the way sunshine does, so you feel the heat within minutes and it isn't lost every time a door opens.
Where does infrared heating work best?
Spaces with high ceilings, draughts, or long gaps between use: village halls, churches, workshops, garden rooms, conservatories and bathrooms. It's also a neat option for rooms where there's no wall space for a radiator, because panels can go on the ceiling.
Is it expensive to run?
Because it heats you rather than the whole volume of air, and comes up to temperature almost straight away, you only run it when the space is in use. With a thermostat and timer or occupancy control, that usually means far fewer hours than heating an empty building in advance.
Can the panels go in a bathroom?
Yes, with the right IP-rated panel in the right zone. Mirror and ceiling panels are popular in bathrooms and en-suites, and they help keep condensation down.
How is it controlled?
Each panel or zone runs from a thermostat, and can be set on a timer, a schedule, or occupancy and time-delay control, so a hall heats when people arrive and switches off when they leave.
