Three-phase power & distribution boards
New and upgraded supplies, distribution boards, sub-mains and power for machinery. We work out the load, deal with the network operator, and switch over out of hours so you don't lose a working day.
Free site survey · Written scope and price before we start · Out-of-hours working available
What we do
- Three-phase supply upgrades: load assessment, SP Energy Networks application and the installation from the cut-out onwards.
- Distribution boards and switchgear: replacing old boards, adding capacity, and main isolators and busbar chambers.
- Sub-mains and sub-distribution: feeding workshops, outbuildings, extensions and additional units.
- Machinery and equipment supplies: dedicated circuits, isolators and connections for plant, kitchens and workshop kit.
- Splitting and sub-metering: dividing a supply between units or tenants.
- Phase balancing: spreading load evenly across the phases to free up capacity and stop nuisance tripping.
Signs you need more power, or better distribution
| SIGN | WHAT IT USUALLY MEANS |
|---|---|
| Breakers tripping when several machines run | Circuits or a phase are overloaded. Rebalancing or a new circuit usually fixes it |
| No spare ways left in the board | The board is full. A larger board or sub-distribution is needed before anything else is added |
| Planning EV chargers, a heat pump or new kit | The supply may not have the capacity. We check before you buy |
| Old boards with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection | Out of date and often flagged on an EICR. Replace before it fails |
| Hot boards or burning smells | Stop and call us. A thermal survey finds the cause |
How it works

Three-phase and distribution questions, answered
Do we need a three-phase supply?
If you run heavy machinery, commercial kitchen equipment, large heat pumps, several EV chargers, or simply a lot of load at once, probably. Three-phase delivers more power and spreads it evenly. We'll look at what you run and tell you whether single-phase will cope.
How do we get three-phase installed?
The new supply itself comes from the network operator, SP Energy Networks in the Lothians. We work out the load you need, make the application on your behalf where you want us to, and install everything from their cut-out onwards: meter tails, main switch, distribution and circuits.
How long does a supply upgrade take?
The network operator's part can take weeks or months depending on the work on their side. Our installation is usually quick once the supply is in. We plan it so the switchover causes as little downtime as possible.
Can you split a supply between two units?
Yes. We can divide an existing supply between units with separate distribution and, where needed, sub-metering, so each tenant has their own protection and a record of what they use.
Can the switchover be done out of hours?
Yes. Board changes and supply switchovers are routinely done at weekends or overnight so the business doesn't lose a working day.
