What a home charger install actually involves

A home charger isn't a plug — it's a new 7kW circuit. That's roughly three kettles running flat out, so it gets its own way in your fuseboard: a dedicated circuit with its own protection, a cable run to wherever the car parks, and the charger itself commissioned and tested before we leave.

Before anything is booked, we check your consumer unit has the capacity and protection for the extra load. Many older boards don't — if yours needs work first, that's priced separately and agreed up front, never discovered on install day. (More on that: fuseboard & consumer unit upgrades.)

7kW is the sweet spot for home charging: it uses your existing single-phase supply, charges overnight easily, and pairs with smart tariffs. All new home chargers are smart chargers by law — they can schedule charging for the cheap hours automatically.

Fully accredited. We're a SELECT member and approved installers for OZEV and Energy Saving Trust grants — if a grant is open to you, we'll check your eligibility and handle the application.

Tethered or untethered?

The one real decision you make. Both charge at the same speed — it's about the cable.

TETHERED The cable lives on the charger, coiled on the wall. Park, uncoil, plug in — the everyday-easy option, and what most households choose.
UNTETHERED A socket only — you use the car's own cable. Tidier on the wall, works with any future car or cable length, slightly more faff every time you charge.
EITHER WAY 7kW charging, its own protected circuit, smart scheduling via the app, and a full electrical certificate for the new circuit when we're done.

What it costs

Fixed prices, agreed before we book you in. Send photos of your fuseboard, meter and parking spot with the form and most jobs can be priced without a visit.

Standard install — charger, dedicated circuit, standard cable runCharger unit included · typical duration 1 day £900 + VAT
Longer cable runs or awkward routesPriced from a survey or your photos before booking priced from survey
Consumer unit upgrade, where needed firstOnly if your board can't take the load — always quoted separately priced from survey

All prices are plus VAT and include commissioning and the certificate for the new circuit.

How it works

  1. Tell us your setup

Car (or the one on order), where it parks, and photos of your fuseboard and meter. That's usually enough to price the whole job.

    5 minutes
  2. Fixed price & date

You get one figure covering the charger, circuit and cable run. If the fuseboard needs work first, that's flagged and priced now — not on the day.

    Within 1 working day
  3. Install day

New protected circuit from the board, cable run to the charger position, unit mounted and wired. Power is off briefly while we connect at the board.

    Typically 1 day on site
  4. Commissioning & handover

We test the circuit, set up the app and a cheap-hours schedule with you, and leave the certificate for the new circuit.

We had an EV car charger point installed by Val. His communication and work were excellent. He also spent time researching the best product to suit just what we needed for our holiday rental house. Great friendly service. Thanks Val.

EV charger questions, answered

How much does an EV charger cost installed?

A standard install — charger, dedicated circuit and a straightforward cable run — is £900 + VAT. Longer runs, or a fuseboard that needs checking or upgrading first, are priced from a survey or photos, but you'll know the full figure before anything is booked. Send photos with your enquiry and we can usually price it the same day.

Do I need a driveway?

You need off-street parking the cable can safely reach — a driveway, carport or garage. A charger can't serve a car parked on a public road, since the cable would cross the pavement. If you're not sure your parking qualifies, send a photo and we'll tell you straight.

How long does installation take?

Typically one day on site. Power is off briefly while we connect the new circuit at the fuseboard, and the charger is tested, commissioned and set up in its app before we leave. Long cable runs through a house can add time — we'll say so when we quote.

Will my fusebox cope?

That's the first thing we check, from your photos. A 7kW charger is a big permanent load, and some older boards need upgrading or a load-management device before one can be added safely. If yours does, we quote that separately up front — you'll never find out on install day.

How many miles per hour does it charge?

Around 25–30 miles of range per hour on a 7kW charger, depending on the car's efficiency. In practice that means almost any daily mileage is recovered overnight — an eight-hour cheap-rate window adds roughly 200 miles.

Are any grants available?

We're approved installers for both OZEV and Energy Saving Trust grants. Schemes open, close and change their rules, so ask when you enquire and we'll tell you what applies to your property right now — and handle the application if something does.
